6-8 October 2022, Cape Town, South Africa
The first activity of the START: Health & Biosciences grant was the Legacy of START conference held from the 6-8 October 2022 as a hybrid event in Cape Town. 40 people attended in person with others joining online. Participants represented scientific research institutes and facilities, industry and suppliers from South Africa, the United Kingdom (UK), France, and Brazil. The three-day event was organised and opened by Professor Trevor Sewell from the University of Cape Town.
The aim of meeting together was to evaluate the START programme and plan for current and future needs. Research papers were presented by scientists and students who had participated in the START programme, as well as other South African scientists with an interest in Structural Biology. Scientists from the UK’s national synchrotron – Diamond Light Source (Diamond), the European Synchrotron Research Facility (ESRF), and the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) – introduced their facilities and laboratories and explained how these international resources could assist South African scientists. Representatives of Thermo-Fisher Scientific and SPTlabtech described how their products and operational models could make Structural Biology research more productive and affordable. The conference also enabled the first viewing of the Keiskamma Sci-Art tapestries.

The meeting was funded through the START: Health and Bio Sciences grant to Diamond Light Source from the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). The International Science Council (ISC) Grants for Travel and Hosting of Events and the International Union of Crystallography (IUcr) assisted with seed money. Local instrument suppliers – Scientific and Precision Solutions and Wirsam Scientific – sponsored the conference dinner.
